EcoRoute is a next-generation public transport charging system that replaces traditional batteries with high-speed wireless supercapacitor charging. Designed to address the growing environmental cost of battery manufacturing and disposal, EcoRoute uses electromagnetic copper coil technology to wirelessly transfer energy between the power grid and a bus in just 20 seconds — the duration of a typical stop. Each quick charge delivers around 5 km of range, allowing buses to run seamlessly throughout the day without carrying heavy, unsustainable battery packs.
The system is controlled by an intelligent unit housed within each bus stop, which ensures precise alignment, safe energy transfer, and constant data flow to drivers and transport operators. This supports a more reliable and accurate public transport network, helping cities like Auckland achieve growth targets while reducing emissions. The physical charging infrastructure is built using robust, injection-moulded PVC plates, secured directly into the asphalt with M10 bolts and vibration-dampening adhesives. Designed for rapid deployment, each bus stop can be installed in under four hours with minimal on-site work, allowing scalable expansion citywide.
EcoRoute presents a powerful response to the environmental limitations of current electric vehicle systems. Supercapacitors are faster to produce, less reliant on rare-earth materials, and fully recyclable — making them a future-ready energy alternative. This project aligns with several key Sustainable Development Goals, including affordable clean energy, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption. By combining clean technology, rapid installation, and user-focused design, EcoRoute offers a smarter, greener way forward for public transport.
