This project focuses on designing and building a high-performance foiling Moth to compete at the SuMoth competition in Italy. Following the successful launch of our first prototype, our team is now developing a second-generation boat, using testing and data from Boat 1 to improve performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
As an Executive of the University of Auckland SuMoth team, I lead the design of the wing design, foil mounting structure, control systems, rigging, and ride-height system, while managing a multidisciplinary team of over 25 students. I have also been heavily involved in composite manufacturing using prepreg, wet lay-up and resin infusion, 3D scanning, stainless steel waterjet cutting, additive manufacturing with metal and plastics, adhesive selection, and control system analysis. Beyond the technical work, I secure sponsorship, maintain industry relationships, and help drive the overall direction of the project.
The project combines advanced composite engineering, structural and mechanical design, systems integration, and hands-on manufacturing to develop a competitive foiling platform while providing valuable leadership and project management experience.
